The title quest has reached fever pitch after an edge-of-the-seat Qualifying round at the EuroSpeedway track in Lausitz, Germany.
Paul Bonhomme took the single point up for grabs with a 1:10:16 clean run just ahead of fellow British pilot Nigel Lamb of Team Breitling. Bonhomme’s points total now hits 54 overall putting him six points clear of Austria’s Hannes Arch as we move into the Top 12 round.
“We’ve now completed yesterday and from now on is a different day. I’ve got to behave myself in the Top 12, try and speed it up for the Super 8 and get into the Final 4,” said a relieved-looking Bonhomme. “I’m still very aware of the fact that both Nigel Lamb and Hannes Arch can still overtake. I was hoping if I didn’t get the point, Nigel would.”
The vibe in the Team Abu Dhabi hangar was a stark contrast after Arch picked up a damaging double penalty haul in his Qualifying run. His time of 1:14:75 put him back in 7th place going into the Top 12. "I think it was mental and I just did too many mistakes,” said Arch. “I felt that I was not right there in the track so tried to survive mentally. Second or seventh doesn't matter in that case. We'll focus on the next round.”
At the bottom of the table, America’s Michael Goulian and Sergey Rakhmanin of Russia end their 2010 championship campaigns after failing to make it through to the next round.
