From the outside, it may seem that a high performance athlete lives a life of glamour. But in many cases, it’s one that also involves a gruelling schedule and long periods away from the family. You may be in the spotlight, but sometimes things get a bit lonely too...
We definitely log a lot of miles every year, especially being from Canada. We travel a few times to Europe and back during the season and then to New Zealand for summer training.
I still have a place in my hometown of Mont Tremblant, Quebec, but I moved to Calgary at the beginning of last summer because the ski team is based there. Living in Calgary makes it easier to get access to doctors, a physio, and training facilities.
'When you think about it your career is pretty short'
The other big factor in the move was that we do a lot of our training in the fall out there before we head to Europe for the season. So, that means I also get to spend an extra month with my wife, Karen, and little girl, Logann, who just turned two on January 8.
I usually come over to Europe at the beginning of the season and just push it through to the end. You lose quite a few days if you go back with jet lag so I just prefer to stay over here and have the family visit me a couple of times. They were last here in January.
When you think about it, your career is not so long and the skiing season is pretty short – it’s a few months really – so I just use those extra days for training instead. Come springtime, I can take some time off!
