It's fair to say that musicians detest pigeonholing. Luke Vibert, recording artist with Warp Records and Ninja Tune, gets around this particular habit by possessing a near schizophrenic musical personality.
Luke Vibert is the common denominator of multiple musical personalities (Wagon Christ, Plug, Amen Andrews, Kerrier District ) which provide a rich output of work ranging from experimental drum 'n' bass on one album, via instrumental hip-hop on the next, to acid house sitting somewhere in the middle.
Hailing from Cornwall, UK, he grew up on Yves Montand and Jimi Hendrix as well as hip-hop and Herbie Hancock, down the road from future collaborator Aphex Twin, whose early bedroom tapes passed around the area inspired Luke to depart from his youthful punk bands (The Hate Brothers, for example) into solo electronic composition under nom de guerre Wagon Christ.
He recalls how, “Around 93 when I chose the name Wagon Christ, every techno DJ was called X1 or X3... That’s why I came up with the name Wagon Christ to be totally the opposite of that.”
An avid record collector with a post-modern approach to music, Luke samples rare grooves and interesting library music from his collection to create a unique sound.
His work is displayed across many seminal record labels, from leading 90s label Rising High to Mo'Wax, from Nina Tune to Warp.
Luke also plays many festivals and tours regularly. Along with Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, or Mark Pritchard, Luke Vibert approaches music inventively. You’re never certain of where he will lead you next.
