This Spain-based competition is full of interesting characters – in the sense of top skaters, B-Boys and BMXers – and so is the word O’Marisquiño itself, what with that tricky tilda. Allow us to expand a little with some factual info…

Marisquiño...

The festival is a true celebration of extreme sport and culture, featuring competitions in BMX Street, skateboarding, FMX, Flatland, and MTB Downhill – as well as B-Boy contests and live music. Among the athletes appearing in Galicia will be, Viki Gomez, Mack McKelton, Madars Apse and Dany Leon.

Vigo...

Once again the Spanish city of Vigo will play host to O’Marisquiño. Located on the Atlantic coast, the city is the largest in the Galicia region of the country with a population of nearly 300,000. Vigo has a rich history, and as a port city played an important role in Spain’s war against England in the 16th Century, as well as the Reconquista 100 years later. The city is also home to the largest fishing port in Europe, and has a long sporting tradition including football, basketball and sailing.

Mack McKelton...

A child of Africa, Mr Unbreakable learned to skate in the rough urban townscapes of his childhood; he moved around Botswana, Cameroon and South Africa before settling in Germany. He now lives in Berlin and will be taking his “keep on keeping on” mantra to Vigo along with Spaniard Dany Leon – who he enjoyed an unusual skate with recently.

Street...

This is where it’s all happening at O’Marsiquiño. BMX and skate competitions on purpose-built ramp on the asphalt dovetail nicely with B-Boy competitions where breakdancers try to do outdo each other in the public eye.

Public Enemy...

One of the highlights of this year’s festival will be an appearance from hip-hop royalty, Public Enemy. Chuck D, Flavor Flav and DJ Lord first got together in 1982 – along with Terminator X, The S1W and The Bomb Squad – after Def Jam co-founder Rick Rubin heard Chuck D freestyling on a demo tape. They then went on to lead hip-hop into a golden age with albums including, Yo! Bum Rush The Show, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, Fear of a Black Planet, and Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black.
