Ever wanted to control a car with just a blink and a turn of the head? If so, Red Bull Formula Face will be right up your alley. Check out some exclusive images from the envelope-pushing, free-to-play game...
Driven by a unique facial-recognition controlling system, the soon-to-be-launched Red Bull Formula Face is shaping up to be one of the most exciting and innovative free-to-play games on the net. Simply put, you control your cartoony car with a variety of facial expressions!
"You steer with the left or right tilting of your head and get an extra turbo boost when blinking," says Stefan Becker from game developers Buzzin Monkey. "You can also activate your collected specials by smiling - you can shoot other racers with scissors, place glue on the track to tears off their tyres, activate monster-tyres to drive over them etc. And last but not least, earn photo bonuses when you copy a certain grimace that is shown to you during the race. These photos are collected in your account and can be shared on Facebook."
The whole thing is made possible thanks to some very clever technology: "We are very much into augmented reality and webcam-tracking," says Stefan. "When it came up middle of 2010 that it would soon be possible to track your mimic, we started thinking about a way to use this technology. Making it available to use online was a huge step."
"The idea came up during a late brainstorming session with a few beers," says Stefan of the game's unique conception. "We loved the idea of how stupid people look while playing. I think a lot will try to copy something like this, as far as we know, this is the first game of this kind ever.’
As well as giving gamers a unique controlling system, the makers of Red Bull Formula Face are also keen on building up a community of users by allowing players to share their craziest moves, wackiest avatars and silliest facial expressions with social network buddies.
With the emphasis purely set to fun, it's a game that all skill levels can easily get into. "We really tried to make it big fun for everybody," says Stefan. "Though if you want to improve or beat your friends score, you have to show how ‘good’ your face is."
If all that wasn't enough, there's a very cool added bonus that allows you to download, print out and make your very own paper foldable avatars: "We spent many nightshifts getting the paper foldables done," says Stefan. "So we have many paper friends around us."
