Roger Schmidt is the new Red Bull Salzburg coach. Former Schalke '04 boss Ralf Rangnick and former France coach Gerard Houllier have also been unveiled as the new masterminds of Red Bull's international soccer programme...
Ralf Rangnick (pictured above right with Roger Schmidt) has joined a formidable new management team led by former France and Liverpool coach Gerard Houllier, who takes over as global soccer director for Red Bull’s portfolio of clubs - which includes RB Salzburg, as well as New York Red Bulls and teams in Ghana and Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The ambitious coach is not turning his back on German football, however, as he will also be responsible for the development of sister club RB Leipzig, who play in the German lower leagues.
Working with them at Red Bull Salzburg is Roger Schmidt, who has impressed club officials with his results at German second division club Paderborn. Schmidt becomes head coach of the Austrian team.
Having served Paderborn as a player and manager, Schmidt leaves with the board’s blessing and he extended his thanks to the club. “We [Paderborn] put together a team that managed to play good attacking football despite several departures. The offer from Salzburg came out of the blue and it's a very attractive role. I wish everyone involved with SC Paderborn all the best for the future."
RB Salzburg have established themselves as the dominant force in Austrian football since the club was bought by Red Bull in 2005, winning the league four times, and sealing their first ever Austrian Cup in May.
