In an industry dominated by flavour-of-the-month novelty acts, manufactured stars and overnight sensations, J-Live has a reputation for going against the grain. Tune in as the BBE-artist reveals his headphone highlights to Red Bull Music Academy radio.
J-Live may not be a household name but his is one of the most respected names in the business and has worked with such producers as DJ Premier, Pete Rock, DJ Spinna, Prince Paul, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Spooky, Numark and Da Beatminerz to name a few.
As a songwriter, he's also worked with Mos Def, El Da Sensei, Wordsworth, Talib Kweli, Chali Tuna and many more and as a live performer, he's toured all over the world.
Born Jean-Jacques Cadet (Jon Joc Ka-Day) and raised in Spanish Harlem, J-Live reps NY in more ways than one: J-live was already touring while still studying at New York State university in Albany.
Whether self-produced or working with others, J’s beats are bass heavy boom-bap instrumentals that infuse various genres of music from afro beat, latin, jazz, reggae, rock and funk into his own distinct hip hop sound.
The one constant theme in J-Live’s ever evolving style of music is the use of original styles, and imaginative concepts, to stay fresh relevant and timeless. Check it out on Red Bull Music Academy Radio:
