The Red Bull Soapbox Race hit one of Brazil's largest cities, Belo Horizonte, for the first time at the weekend. Check out the action here in pictures.

To cook the famously hearty food from the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais well, one must use a wood-burning stove. But it can also do much more than just cook – like reaching dizzying speeds going downhill, fast enough to take top honours at the Red Bull Soapbox Belo Horizonte.

In order to be in with a chance of success at Red Bull Soapbox Belo Horizonte, the particpants needed to impress a jury which included Red Bull kitesurfer, Bruna Kajiya, and famous Belo Horizonte singer, Wilson Sideral.

Around 57,000 people gathered at the iconic Praça do Papa (Pope Square, visited by John Paul II in the 80s), Belo Horizonte’s highest point, to watch the race, which included vehicles in the form of mosquitoes.

It was the second and final Red Bull Soapbox of 2011 in Brazil – last April, 25,000 people watched Red Bull Soapbox Balneario Camboriu in the Southern region.

Representing Brasilia and the National Congress, the “Regresso Nacional” team (pictured below) took second, with a local Hangover movie-inspired squad, “Se Beber Não Dirija e Não Case”, completing the podium.

“The descent was like a rollercoaster ride. I just closed my eyes and refused to brake, and it worked”, celebrated driver/cook Andre Ferri, whose team, called “Red Bule Uai Sô”, took the first prize of a trip to the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos in Sao Paulo next month.

The SCV team from Goiania in Goias state took the special “Fastest Team” award, with its driver being awarded a Manzini Racing School course, also at the Interlagos racetrack for the feat.
