Now in its fifth thrill-inducing year, the Nordic Trophy is continuing to grow from strength-to-strength. This year for the very first time it's extending from 12 participating clubs to 18, and throwing open its doors to entrants from outside Sweden and Finland. In line with this increase it will now also be known as the European Trophy Hockey Tournament.
Finishing with the annual Red Bull Salute, the new format will see the 18 teams, from seven European nations; Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Austria, compete against each other in two divisions, Capital and Central. The divisions have been formed taking geographical location and travel into account. All games will be played in accordance with IIHF rules and top ranked teams will be awarded prize money.
Game days are set to be Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The regulation rounds will be played from August 11th to August 28th, with the top four teams from each division qualifying for the play-offs. The final weekend tournament, the Red Bulls Salute, will take place in two venues in Salzburg and Zell am See on September 3rd-5th. EC Red Bull Salzburg automatically qualify for the final as hosts.
EC Red Bull Salzburg is immensely proud of its invitational tournament and deservedly so. In only five years it has gained international recognition and brought the world's top teams to Salzburg, including the NHL's L.A. Kings and stars from across Europe.
You can catch the action on Red Bull Web TV throughout the tournament.
