Despite Indy having a long and fruitful existence of over a century in racing, it is a relative new-comer to the Grand Prix motorcycle racing season, with the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix returning for only its fifth successive year. The first edition took place on September 14th 2008 and was won by racing supremo Valentino Rossi. The layout is similar to the setup used for the Formula One United States Grand Prix between 2000 and 2007, but not identical. It has been reversed to a counterclockwise layout, with a new complex of corners just after the start-finish line, inside Turn 1 of the oval. This means that the bikes do not use any of the banked oval corners. The double-hairpin at the Hulman Straight was replaced with a traditional esses.
The inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis GP took place 99 years after the previous motorcycle race at the track, in 1909. The first motorsports event at the track consisted of 7 motorcycle races, sanctioned by the Federation of American Motorcyclists (FAM), on August 14, 1909. This was originally planned as a two-day, 15-race program, but ended before the first day was completed, due to concerns over suitability of the track surface for motorcycle use.
