EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX

Azerbaijan has been an independent state since October 1991 a few months prior to the Soviet Union ceasing to exist and in geographical terms is home to the Caucasus mountains and the Caspian Sea. It is in the country's capital, located on its shores that Formula 1 is making its newest home at the Baku street circuit in 2016. Grand Prix racing is just one more global series to be added to the Azerbaijan portfolio of sporting events, as it hosted last year's inaugural European Games athletics championship and it also boasts a round of the World Cycling Road Racing championships.

Baku City Circuit is located in a city that mixes the old – it's famous for its medieval walled part that dates back to the 12th century – and the new, with very modern buildings like the Heydar Aliyev Center. In fact the track will feature a section that makes it the narrowest on the calendar as it passes near the old walls, although the rest of the track is mainly high-speed.

Those who find spelling place names difficult will be glad to hear that this round of the World Championship is not named after the host nation, but is called the Grand Prix of Europe. Baku thus not only becomes the 32nd country to host a Formula 1 World Championship race, it also joins the list of five tracks to have hosted a total of 22 European GPs, the most recent being the Valencia street circuit, where the race was held from 2008 to 2012.
